Questions

Asked & answered

What’s the difference between the two locations?

Both offer a traditional wood-fired sauna and cold water for contrast therapy. The Woodland Sauna has three freshwater cold baths, cold showers and an area for events and wellbeing therapies. Fallen Willow has two saunas and a ground-fed lake for cooling off and a mini swim. Both are private, 2 miles apart.

How do I book a private or group session?

Find a date and time in the diary that still shows all 6 communal spaces free, then contact us to request it — we’ll swap that slot for a private booking. A slot marked “reserved” is already someone else’s.

Can I swim in the lake if I book the Woodland Sauna?

No — the Woodland Sauna is a different site, about 2 miles by road. It has cold showers, three plunge baths, woodland walks, an events tent, a therapy area and valley views, and its sauna is bigger: ideal for larger groups, privates and events.

Is the lake at Fallen Willow safe for swimming?

It’s regularly maintained and monitored, and ground-fed through a spring, so not connected to the polluted rivers. Take care and know your swimming ability. On swimming-lesson days we share the lake and keep to the top end, in front of the sauna.

Can I book a swim-only session?

No. Your sauna booking includes shared use of a section of the lake to dip or take a mini swim — we don’t take wild-swim-only bookings.

What is your cancellation policy?

48 hours’ notice: full refund. 24 hours’ notice: transfer only. Private bookings and events: one week’s notice. Email info@tuhkatalo.com to reschedule or cancel.

Can I put water on the stove?

Yes — it’s the best part of an authentic sauna and raises the humidity. Drizzle with care and check with the others first: it adds a burst of heat, and dumping too much water can take the heat out of the stove.

How long should I stay in the heat and the cold?

Start with a 10-minute warm-up to open the pores, then 10–15 minutes in the sauna followed by a brief cold plunge. Repeat as you like, listening to your body.

Are there changing and toilet facilities?

Yes: basic changing huts at both sites (we do encourage you to arrive ready to sauna), toilets at both, and two cold showers at the Woodland Sauna.

What about health considerations?

If you have a medical condition — heart or respiratory problems, epilepsy or other concerns — check with a healthcare professional first. Stay hydrated and listen to your body’s limits.

What’s the minimum age?

16. Under-18s must be accompanied by an adult.

Can I host an event?

Yes, at the Woodland Sauna: the event space takes up to 12 including the host, with the whole woodland and sauna during your slot — from £120 for an hour to £480 for the day. Events are listed on our site; bookings go directly to the host.

Can I bring my dog?

We love our furry friends, but we have a no-dog policy.
